Much Ado About Nothing (Ann Arbor 2012)
When designing the costumes for the bar maids and Margaret, I wanted to do period-style dresses with period fabrics in jewel tones and the shimmer of satin. The dresses were designed and constructed to be worn with hoop skirts and pantaloons underneath. The stage and set turned out to be intimate, however, so there was no room on the stage for hoop skirts. The dresses were fixed by tacking the backs of the skirts up to the waist in a way that made the skirts appear to be bustled.
